SELVAGEM

Marco Martins proposes in SELVAGEM a reflection on the use of masks in ritualistic practices that, since time immemorial, have collectively marked crucial moments such as equinoxes and solstices in various parts of Europe, incorporating characters such as the Wild Man, the Bear, the Goat, or the Devil. 

We are increasingly becoming a society of masks that hide behind a virtual world. What is the current meaning of a mask? How can living with sanitary masks transform our activities, activism and identity? We live in a daily life filled with avatars, caricatures, memes, applications that allow us to transform our faces and bodies, and various types of filters capable of further blurring the line between faces and masks. Based on research into the ancestral meaning of the mask, SELVAGEM will map its value as a possibility for identity, as well as the complexity inherent in the multiplication and intersection of identities.
